I Am True

Much like my last post—I Am Good—this one too has a double meaning. We must all be true and strive to tell the truth to others, but I would say that it is just as important if not more that we be true to ourselves, since if we are acting with a truth to ourselves, it would be harder to lie to ourselves and others out of shame or fear.

.

.

We know when we are true to ourselves. The world falls away and we are okay with that. Our heart is light and we smile more. We are kind, child-like, and hopeful. But it’s difficult to tell sometimes if we are being true. We get lost in words and images. We get lost “out there”.

.

.

More often than not, we know when we are not acting with our true selves. Our bodies are the first voice of warning, giving us hangovers, breakdowns, illness, tightness, stress, and anxiety. Our minds are the second voice, giving us shame and guilt and worry and anger and frustration.

.

.

We may never even get to the third and true warning of our truth’s violation, which is the heart’s voice. It’s a quiet voice, so soft and tender. It gets buried, as all good things are. Most good things are difficult to achieve, to do, to be, because they are so brittle. Let’s face it, this modern world is not built to nourish us. Our monkey brains and our ego minds shout at us a million times a minute in a hundred different voices.

.

.

And what are they yelling of? Distractions, habits, expectations, fads; pain, pleasure, money, fame, fortune; and of every other human you come in contact with in real time or online with their own projections and problems, as well as all of THEIR ideas and models of normality in the institutions in our lives—family, sanity, love, fear, joy. The truth of who you are is buried under all of that.

.

.

Yet people achieve their truth every day and more and more are listening to themselves. Hope lies within you. Be true to yourself. Take the time to nourish yourself. Look around you. Ask yourself if you are being true in different situations. Slowly. But by bit, your heart will speak louder.

.

.

I had one of those dreams last night. I won’t tell you about it. It’s all mine. I will tel you that you’ve had one before yourself. It’s one of those profound dreams where your very heart is speaking to you. Dreams are amazing because dreams are like magic, we still can’t altogether explain them. My dreams spoke to me in a very clear way—be true to yourself. Through all of what I’ve learned this year about myself and my place in the world on this next bend in the road of my life, this seems to be such a solid, steady step for me to take next. I will take it starting today.

.

.

Be true to yourself today, if only today. To begin.
