A Monday Breakfast In River North

Throughout the week, through all the stress and the busyness, I take a moment out of the day to write down some details about the environment around me. I’ll be posting them here every Monday.

A German man with a speech impediment talks about his hometown.

An older woman unfolds a glossy map while her husband looks on smiling.

An infant wrapped in a blanket and strapped to her father’s chest has a blade-like cowlick and barely has her eyes open.

A young girl eats with her boyfriend, stabbing and swinging her fork in her hand to make her point as she laughs.

A fuzzy sweater streaked in zigzags.

A distant churning sound comes from the kitchen in the back of the restaurant.

The small square olive-colored tiles on the greasy wall.

How you can hear not a single conversation singly but only as a churning, rolling exhale.

A small black kid talking loud and eager As he holds a toy train like a water-bottle.
